Virtual Voices? Empty Virtual Voices?

Tue Sep 08, 2020 3:15 pm
As 2020 dawned, it would have seemed very unlikely that concerts with an audience, face-to-face music group sessions or choir rehearsals would soon become impossible. But six months have almost gone by since most choirs or groups have met to sing or perform.
This month's Last Night of the Proms will be so different. At grassroots level, so much participatory music making has gone virtual. Do you like singing or playing online? Have you found virtual music-making still helps you connect with music and with other people? Or have you found it impractical? Is the technical side a barrier? How have you found the time delay known as latency?
For me, living in a rural area, the switch to online initiatives has opened up new opportunities and removed barriers of distance and transport.
If you run or attend a music group for people in particular situations, does the virtual limit its impact? For example, do you find that you yourself or other people who have dementia or autism or a chronic illness respond less to online sessions? If you have mental health issues or a physical health condition, do you find a virtual group more helpful, or less? Is it less daunting to try singing in a virtual choir, or do you miss the face-to-face interaction?
